Chinaware DO's and DON'Ts

DO

  1. Do store your fine china with care. It's possible for one piece to scratch another with the unglazed finish on the underside of each plate. If stacking your plates, a paper towel or napkin placed between each piece will offer additional protection.
  2. Do wash your dinnerware as soon as possible after use when foods are more easily removed.
  3. Most manufacturers recommend dishwasher use. When available, use the china and crystal cycle, and use a recommended detergent such as Cascade®, All, or Calgonite, and use half the recommended amount.
  4. If metallic flatware marks appear on the undercoated surface of your dinnerware, use a stainless steel polish to remove them.
  5. Do give extra care to patterns featuring wide, solid, colour borders.
  6. Do rotate your dinnerware so that each piece receives the same frequency of use. This will ensure that the various pieces in your set maintain a consistent appearance over time.

DON'T

  1. Don't slide one piece of your dinnerware over another, wet or dry. When washing by hand, never leave your china soaking in the sink for extended periods of time.
  2. Don't use serrated knife edges on bone china. A serrated edge is more likely to cut into the glaze on your plates.
  3. Don't stack your teacups. Doing so places pressure on the cup below that can make it susceptible to breakage.
  4. Don't microwave any dinnerware accented with gold or platinum.
  5. Don't subject your dinnerware to sudden temperature changes. If you wish to warm dinner plates, do so by placing them in a cold oven, and gradually raise the temperature to a maximum of 150°F. When using stoneware or other oven-safe products, don't heat or cool them suddenly.
  6. Don't overload the detergent cup when using the dishwasher. Never add detergent until you are ready to activate the machine.
  7. Don't use abrasive cleaners near your dinnerware's precious metal trim or near wide solid colour borders.
